Source pathway descriptionDirect air capture (DAC) technology employing a solid sorbent that captures and concentrates CO2 from the atmosphere. The CO2-rich vapour is condensed and exposed to a carbonation reactor connected to asbestos mine tailings. The reactor traps CO2 in mine tailings to form carbonates, which are stable for millennia. The sorbent is regenerated for re-use.
Storage descriptionPermanent sequestration of CO2 in mine tailings through mineralization, forming carbonates stable for millennia. Mineralization also destroys asbestos fibres in mine tailings.
Project locationQuebec, Canada (Alpha Lab test facility in Quebec; Skyrenu based in Sherbrooke, Que.)
NotesPilot trial at Deep Sky's Alpha Lab test facility. The unit sold to Deep Sky has a capacity to remove 50 tonnes of CO2 per year. Deep Sky's proposed commercial facility is designed to remove 200,000 to 300,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. Skyrenu is the 6th DAC partnership for Deep Sky. This is a technology validation trial, not a commercial purchase commitment.
